Tuning and Voicing

Tuning adjusts the tension of the strings so that:

  • The pitch of each string is stable
  • Each note is in tune with itself
  • All notes are in tune with each other
  • The piano is in tune at the international standard
  • The force of the string tension is consistent

Voicing adjusts the tone of the instrument so that:

  • Each note has an aesthetically pleasing tone
  • All notes have a consistent tone

Diagnostic and Regulation

Diagnostic assesses the cause of a problem or inconsistency and leads to recommendations of what action should follow next.

Regulation is the adjustment of the mechanical parts that enable a piano to play. They ensure that:

  • The keyboard rests on a solid foundation and shifts smoothy when the una corda pedal is used
  • The keys are level and square; have the correct height, dip, and amount of friction; repeat quickly; and feel consistent and controlled
  • The dampers end the sound of all notes together and are seated on the strings to minimize wear
  • The pedals function correctly and have no lost motion

Repairs and Cleaning

Repairs mend or replace a broken part.

Cleaning makes your instrument beautiful and removes dust, dirt, and debris.

Both ensure that the piano plays well and that moving parts avoid unnecessary wear. Common repairs include:
